In Europe, the Iberian Peninsula suffers the most from climate change. Heat waves in the peninsula are becoming more intense and droughts are more frequent.
In central Portugal, the temperature reached 46.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, according to preliminary data from the meteorological office. The Spanish Meteorological Service predicted Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius.
In Portugal, around 900 firefighters today continued to battle a wildfire that has already burned thousands of hectares near the touristy Algarve. Ten aircraft are also being used to fight the flames.
Portugal’s civil protection authority reported that the perimeter of the fire had stabilized overnight Monday, but two critical points remained.
Around 20 villages and several tourist attractions were evacuated in Portugal on Monday. In total, around 1,500 people have been evacuated since Saturday. Approximately 40 people, including 28 firefighters, received emergency medical assistance.
Meanwhile, another wildfire, which has already ravaged an area of about 7,000 hectares in central Portugal, died down slightly overnight on Monday. Nearly 2,800 firefighters and 16 aircraft were used to battle the fires across the country on Tuesday.
Bad weather warnings remain in place for both Portugal and Spain.
According to preliminary estimates, 100,000 hectares of lowland areas have burned in the Iberian Peninsula this year.
