Climate change: decarbonization strategy required for the city of Salzburg

It is getting warmer from year to year and the weather extremes are increasing. Neos municipality Ismail therefore calls for a decarbonization strategy.

SALZBURG. The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), which compared the most important data from the last few decades with 2020, now shows that climate change has an impact on the weather. Air temperature, amount of precipitation and duration of sunshine were compared with the average values for the years 1961 to 1990. The result: climate change is man-made, as Zamg explains, because “large deviations can no longer be statistically explained by natural fluctuations”, says Bernhard Niedermoser, head of the ZAMG regional office in Salzburg.

“We are in a global climate change, which is mainly caused by human greenhouse gas emissions and can only be stopped by us.”

, says Deputy Governor Heinrich Schellhorn about the results.

Pursuit of the Paris climate summit goals

According to the Paris climate summit, industrialized countries should show full decarbonisation (moving away from carbon) by 2050. In the second half of the 21st century, greenhouse gases are said to have dropped to net zero. Neos municipal council Ismail Uygur is therefore calling for a decarbonization strategy for the city. “When working out, it should be borne in mind that, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement, the city administration should aim for net zero emissions by 2050.” Long-term consequences for energy, for example in the building sector, energy infrastructure or spatial planning, must be implemented wisely, explains Uygur.
