Climate Adaptation and Urban Greening: Strategies for a Cooler and Greener Future in Freiburg

Re: “Something is always more important”, editorial by Andreas Frey (Comment & Analysis, July 13)

Thank you, Mr. Frey, for your apt comment on the idle climate adaptation in Germany – not only in the Ahr Valley! In Freiburg, too, far too little is happening in the direction of climate adaptation – and that in the Breisgau, which is already so hot. The heat of the last two summers is the new normal and there will be a few more degrees. For cooling we need more trees, islands of green and green facades. And in really large numbers and as quickly as possible!

We will only get the space for this if we organize stationary traffic differently. An uncomfortable reality, but unfortunately unavoidable, since no defensive reactions will help in the long run. What is frightening at first glance is actually a great asset if you take a closer look (also for car owners). Better air and more greenery in front of the house, cooler temperatures in summer, fewer deaths from the heat and less time stuck in traffic. Play streets for children, benches to rest and more space for joint activities. Other cities, such as Rotterdam, Copenhagen or Barcelona, have long been leading the way. The sooner we realize this and get to work together, the more comfortable our surroundings will become. We should better look forward to it and get started ourselves instead of suppressing and preventing! Katja Richter, Freiburg
