Climate activists threw soup at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris. Images on social media show two women throwing the soup, then climbing over the railing in front of the painting and shouting slogans in front of the painting.

The two demanded “the right to healthy and sustainable food”. They also shouted that “our agricultural system is sick”.

The Mona Lisa is protected by a thick glass plate, so the painting itself is not damaged. The women also made no attempt to destroy the painting.

It is not the first time that the Mona Lisa has been targeted. Eighteen months ago, the glass in front of the painting was smeared with cake. The perpetrator had first tried to break the glass.

At that time, climate activists regularly targeted famous paintings. Activists from “Just Stop Oil” threw tomato soup at a Van Gogh painting in London.

In 2009, a cup of tea was thrown at the Mona Lisa, shattering the glass. Much longer ago, in 1956, the painting was the target of an acid attack, which damaged the lower part. Since then it has been behind glass.
