London (Reuters) – Climate change activists have continued protests against the financial sector in the UK, this time targeting the Lloyd’s of London insurance market.
As part of a campaign against the insurance and financing of fossil fuel mining, members of the Extinction Rebellion group dumped a symbolic cargo of coal in the form of blackened stones on the street in front of Lloyd’s headquarters in the City of London on Friday. To do this, they unfurled banners with slogans such as “Climate criminals” and “Do not insure the coal mines in West Cumbria”.
It was only on Thursday that activists of the group attacked the window front of the headquarters of the major British bank HSBC with a hammer and chisel and damaged at least 19 windows. Two weeks ago they had broken windows on the Barclays Bank building. Extinction Rebellion stands for a radical change in the economic system in the fight against climate change. Two years ago the group had paralyzed parts of London with blockades that lasted for days. Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested at the time.
