Climate activists let air out of tires of several SUVs in Vienna

The “Luftnot Kollektiv” has claimed responsibility for the action. According to the group, this has rendered “these climate killers” harmless.

Climate activists apparently tampered with numerous parked vehicles in Vienna-Währing on Tuesday night. The state police headquarters confirmed a corresponding online report in the free newspaper “Heute”. The tires of at least 25 cars were let out of air. The group “Luftnot Kollektiv” explained in a post on the short message service X that it wanted to draw attention to the environmental impact of SUVs.

The “Luftnot Kollektiv”, which is probably part of the international “Tyre Extinguishers” movement, admitted to having let the air out of the tires of over 40 SUVs. The Vienna State Police Directorate reported on Tuesday only 25 incidents in the Scheibenberg/Gersthof area. The group also explained that SUVs are particularly problematic due to their high emissions and the increased risk of accidents.

Investigations into property damage

Investigations into the damage to property are ongoing. In addition, the State Office for State Protection and Combating Extremism (LSE) is examining possible links to other groups and connections to other possible incidents.

“Tire Extinguishers” is an international activist group. According to their own statements, they are decentralized and have no hierarchy. Their goal is to “make it impossible to own a large, polluting SUV in urban areas around the world,” as they write on their website. Because these large cars are a “disaster for our health, our public safety and our climate.” (APA/ed.)
