Police detained 71 protesters.
Activists from the Insulate Britain movement have stopped traffic on the M25 in three lanes for the second time in three days, shortly after 8 p.m.
Activists sat on the road, blocking it.
Police report that a car accident involving several cars has also occurred on the M25. It is not yet clear whether the accident was linked to protests.
British Business Minister Kvasi Kvartenga has stated that such protests not only disturb people who go to work and transport goods, but also endanger people’s lives.
Edmund Kings, president of the Automobile Association, said: “While most people understand the need to take action on climate change, highway blocking tactics do just the opposite, alienating the working population who are stuck in this chaos and ultimately creating even more emissions.”
Kings said the roadblock delayed essential deliveries, disrupted emergency services, and prevented people from seeing a doctor or a business meeting on time.
Insulate Britain is urging the government to provide decent jobs for hundreds of thousands of people to be able to insulate the most low-carbon homes.
