Activists have once again defaced a well-known painting in protest against climate change. This time they struck a museum in Lyon and a painting by Monet was destroyed.

Activists from the Riposte Alimentaire collective entered the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon on Saturday afternoon and targeted a work of art by the French painter Claude Monet. Two of them, Ilona and Sophie, threw soup on the artwork and chanted: “This spring is the only one we have left if we don’t respond. What will our future artists paint? What will we dream of when there is no more spring?” With this they referred to the name of the painting ‘Le Printemps.’

“Art is the most beautiful tribute to life. We love art. But our future artists will have nothing left to paint on a burned-out planet. They will no longer dream, in a world of multiple conflicts,” Riposte Alimentaire wrote in a press release, assuring that “there is still a choice.”

In a tweet, Grégory Doucet, mayor of Lyon, said he regretted “the action against a Monet painting.” He offered his “support” to the teams who were “forced to close part of the museum”. However, the mayor of Lyon stated that “in the face of the climate emergency, fear is legitimate.” Before adding: “We are responding with decisive action.”

Nathalie Perrin Gilbert, councilor for culture, told BFMTV that she “understood the concerns of these young people”, but pointed out that “art is a common good”.

“These actions are counterproductive to the message these militants want to convey. Therefore, I condemn these actions. The painting will be examined by a restorer. We don’t know if it’s damaged, but basically it’s not just the frame. The glass is not waterproof like the Mona Lisa,” she continued. The museum and the city plan to file a complaint.
