Climate Activists Block the A12 in The Hague for Second Consecutive Day

Sep 10, 2023 at 12:00 Update: 6 minutes ago

Climate activists blocked the A12 in The Hague for the second day in a row on Sunday. With the permission of the municipality, the police used a water cannon and led demonstrators away. All demonstrators have now been removed from the A12.

The first demonstrators entered the highway around 11:45 am. Five minutes later there were already several hundred demonstrators. At its peak, there were up to a thousand demonstrators on and along the A12.

The police asked the activists to leave and join the announced climate demonstration. This demonstration takes place on the Avenue of Reagan and Gorbachev.

Shortly afterwards, the police used water cannon. A small portion of the group blocking the road was killed, according to one ANP-reporter hit. This happened after the demonstrators did not respond to the police call. The municipality had given the police permission to arrest demonstrators.

According to NU.nl reporter Robbert van der Linde, the demonstrators were led away by the police. They were put on buses and taken to the ADO stadium, just like on Saturday. They will be released there, says a police spokesperson. A few activists did not go voluntarily and were dragged away. People stood next to the road clapping and “you are not alone” (you are not alone) shouted.

2,400 demonstrators were already arrested on Saturday

Climate activists also blocked the road in The Hague on Saturday. More than ten thousand people participated in the climate protests of Extinction Rebellion (XR), including up to nine thousand demonstrators on the highway.

The activists want the government to immediately abolish all fossil subsidies. Until then, they threaten to block the A12 every day.

More than 2,400 climate activists were arrested on Saturday because they participated in the blockade. This happened on the basis of the Public Manifestations Act. The police took the detainees to the ADO stadium and then released them. A number of people have also been arrested for other criminal offences.

Five people have been detained longer for obstruction, not wanting to say who they are and rowdiness, a police spokesperson said on Sunday. Four of them have now been released. The fifth is still in custody for obstructing the police and not wanting to reveal his identity. Two of the five were released with a citation.
