Brussels. Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was arrested on Saturday in Brussels along with dozens of protesters for blocking traffic during a protest against fossil energy subsidies.
Thunberg, who was already arrested for civil disobedience in previous demonstrations, was taken away by Belgian police after refusing to leave the site of a sit-in, according to AFP.
The 21-year-old activist was part of a group of protesters who broke away from a protest organized by the United for Climate Justice movement to call on the European Union (EU) to end fossil fuel subsidies.
The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, but this goal “will not occur without an immediate elimination of fossil fuel subsidies,” climate change activists, scientists and economists wrote in a letter to leaders of the the EU.
“Until these necessary changes are made, people will continue to take to the streets to make our voices heard and hold them accountable,” they added.
