Climate: About blessed banks and left-wing enemy images

Yes, you can’t always talk so badly about the big banks. You have to take “everyone” with you, as Al Jaber in Dubai preaches day in and day out. In their advertising, banks are increasingly talking about the far-reaching climate goals that guide their actions.

But last week there was a nasty attack from the inner ranks. Ironically, the European Central Bank, the ECB, published a study on Wednesday according to which the rule of thumb applies: “The greener a bank positions itself publicly, the less green it actually behaves in its everyday lending business.” (FAZ 7.12.23)

More than 100 “systemically important banks” in Europe were examined. There is a “significant increase in climate and environmental terms” in their advertising. However, banks that do this particularly aggressively grant on average 3.6 percent more loans to “brown borrowers” (i.e. those with high greenhouse gas emissions) than others. The study points to two possible interpretations: that the banks either “don’t care about the issue at all” or that particularly environmentally harmful lending is deliberately “whitewashed” with greenwashing. Even the upper middle-class FAZ headlined this indignantly on December 7, 2023: “The green hypocrisy of the banks.”

But the ECB has a solution to the problem: they simply have to impose “stricter regulatory requirements”. Banks will have to provide better sustainability information in their reports in the future. The fact that no one has figured it out yet, especially at the ECB! On the other hand, it wasn’t exactly difficult to get to the bottom of the banks. And yet they give out loans where they can get the most maximum profit or where they want to dominate or control economic sectors. One could also conclude that the cause is simply due to the laws of today’s state-monopoly capitalism. But what kind of left-wing enemy image would that be?
