CLEVELAND — Steven Kwan drove in Ramón Laureano three at-bats after Tyler Freeman had tied the game with a single in the eighth inning, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Saturday.
The Rangers, who still have the second wild card ticket to the postseason in the American League in hand, suffered their second consecutive setback in the series. They entered the day half a game behind Houston, leader of the Western Division, and one ahead of Seattle, which is third.
Laureano doubled and Bo Naylor walked Will Smith (2-6) before scoring on singles by Freeman and Kwan off Jose Leclerc. Cleveland had stranded 10 runners in the first seven innings, including seven in the first three against Dane Dunning.
The Dominican Reynaldo López (3-7) finished the eighth inning for the Guardians in three men and his compatriot Emmanuel Clase started the ninth to record his 41st save, a figure with which he leads the Major Leagues.
For the Rangers, Dominican Leody Taveras 3-1.
For the Guardaines, the Dominicans José Ramírez 5-2, Laureano 2-1 with one scored, José Luis Tena 2-0. Venezuelan Andrés Giménez 4-0.
