The Winterthur Warriors suffered a clear home defeat against the Calanda Broncos on Saturday. The team from south-east Switzerland beat the Warriors 31: 6 and with this victory takes over the leader position in the table.
The story of the game can be summed up very briefly. The two offensive lines of the two teams did an excellent job. While quarterback Richard Wartmann was sacked exactly once on Winterthur’s side, Conner Manning on Graubünden’s side remained unmolested for the entire game. Both attacking teams were also convincing in the running game, although the Broncos were able to gain more space overall.
Both teams suffered several fumbles, with the Broncos being better at recovering lost balls. The two quarterbacks and the passing game certainly made the biggest differences in the game. The Winterthur receivers were often not where they should have been – or Quarterback Wartmann threw the balls too imprecisely, the analysis will show this. The Broncos defensive backfield was very aggressive, booked two interceptions and was able to stop some of the air strikes. This also succeeded the Warriors defense – but mostly with significantly more space gain for the Broncos than in the opposite case.
All in all, you have to acknowledge that the Broncos handled the chances very efficiently, especially in the first two quarters, while the Warriors fell short of their possibilities. Mistakes, lack of concentration and carelessness against the Broncos will be punished immediately. So after the first quarter it was already 0:14 from the Warriors’ point of view, in the second quarter the Graubünden team increased a field goal to 17 points and added a touchdown to the 24-0 half-time lead. In the third quarter they scored another 7 points and from then on concentrated on checking the watch. The Warriors came to an end in the last quarter when Cédric Peter scored a run touchdown for himself.
In an interview with offensive coordinator Cody Kent, the American made it clear that he was satisfied with the Winterthur running game – but that there were clear deficits in the passing game. Here he wants to start immediately. It can be assumed that further training units will be added to optimize the coordination between quarterback and receivers. Until the next game on Sunday in Geneva against the Geneva Seahawks, a significant increase must be visible in order to score against the aggressive Geneva defense. A success in Geneva ultimately forms the basis for developing a good starting position in the table.
