‘Cleanup Brigades’ in action in Jackson Heights

Dozens of volunteers and neighbors met with officials from the Cleaning, Parks, Transportation, Environmental Protection and Housing Authority departments to celebrate six months of the so-called “City Cleanup Brigades,” which have collected 600,000 garbage bags. in all five boroughs.

Among them, 18,000 tons of possessions ruined by Storm Ida, half in Queens.

“There are many people who are suffering after the storm and we have to help them clean their houses and streets and this is a priority as a district councilor,” said Councilor Daniel Dromm.

“To assure the community that the city is here to help these owners of houses, buildings and businesses,” added the councilor.

But for residents of Jackson Heights, where the brigades will be this week until September 24, cleaning trash, hand sweeping and pressure washing sidewalks, repainting damaged properties and caring for parks, the effort has not paid off.

“Everything remains the same, I see no change,” said a neighbor.

Councilor Dromm.

“There is a lot, a lot of garbage: a lot of boxes, cardboard,” added another neighbor.

There are those who claim that their counties are treated as the last priority.

“I hardly go out for a walk on Roosevelt, but I stay in Woodside. Towards this part it is all very dirty, really. The streets are as you are seeing them here, so it is all to the west. In Manhattan everything is always clean, but not here, “said another neighbor.

In addition to the residents of the area, the officials who have been involved in this initiative hope that the next administration and the new mayor will also continue to prioritize cleaning the streets.
