Clean Gelis River from Water Hyacinth to Anticipate Dengue Fever Spread in Kudus, Central Java

Keeping the river clean is also part of the habit of living a healthy life. Even though it’s currently the dry season, people still have to be vigilant about the spread of DHF because there are still cases found

Kudus, Central Java (ANTARA) – Dozens of farmers and residents in Jati District, Kudus Regency, Central Java, have cleaned the Gelis River from water hyacinth to anticipate the spread of dengue fever (DHF).
According to the Head of Ploso Village, Jati District, Masud in Kudus, Friday, the growth of water hyacinth in the Gelis River, especially around the Tambak Lulang Ploso Bridge, is indeed worrying because about 50 meters of the 50 meter wide river is filled with water hyacinth. Every single water hyacinth plant is taken, he said, mosquitoes fly, so it must be cleaned to anticipate the spread of dengue fever (DHF). In addition, he added, water hyacinth also causes odor pollution because the river flow is also a place for household drains, so that when water hyacinth is cleaned, odor pollution can be reduced because the water can flow more smoothly. To speed up the process of cleaning the water hyacinth, his team involved farmers from several villages that depend on the Gelis River for irrigation. Apart from that, the local community and students from the Darus Syifa Islamic Boarding School were also involved. “Because water hyacinth grows so fast, we hope that the Kudus Regency Government will pay attention. If it can be used for animal feed additives or for handicrafts, of course it can be used so that it can be harvested regularly,” he said. Chairman of the Suropodo Ploso Farmers Group, Ahmad Sodiq, admitted inviting the farmers to join in cleaning up the Gelis River from water hyacinth which can disrupt the smooth flow of water and can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The farmers invited included those from the villages of Ploso, Pasuruhan Lor, Pasuruhan Kidul, Jati Kulon and Jati Kidul, and Jetis Kapuan. The Head of the Kudus District Health Office, Dr. Andini Aridewi, M.Kes positively welcomed the river clean-up movement, because water hyacinth plants can indeed be used as hiding places for mosquitoes. “Maintaining the cleanliness of the river is also part of the habit of living a healthy life. Even though it’s currently the dry season, people still have to be vigilant about the spread of dengue because there are still cases,” he said. Usually, vigilance is carried out every time the rainy season approaches, but there is a change in cycles, so during the dry season like now you still have to be vigilant. In addition to keeping the environment clean, maintain food intake with balanced nutrition, said Andini Aridewi.
