Claudio Bravo explained why Neymar couldn’t replace Messi – it’s all about the Brazilian’s attitude to the game

Betis-Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo spent two years – from 2014 to 2016 – with Barcelona. At the Catalans he played alongside Messi and Neymar.

The Brazilian was tipped as a future international star by many Ballon d’Ors were predicted for him and as he is five years younger than the Argentine, he was seen as a future replacement for Leo. But it didn’t work out: after four seasons Barcelona Neymar switched to PSGand now, at age 31, he’s playing in Saudi Arabia.

Claudio Bravo believes it is entirely Neymar’s fault that he did not reach Messi’s level: “It is possible that he did not demand from himself what others demanded from him. You can be very talented, but if you… If you don’t do your best every day, it’s impossible to achieve anything.”

The Chilean is probably right. Neymar became aware of his fame early on and lowered his expectations of himself. At some moments it seemed as if football wasn’t his first priority at all. The injuries he suffered due to his style of play also did not help him develop.
