Family and friends have expressed their support for prominent Cork GAA commentator and columnist Paudie Palmer, who is in “critical but stable” condition at Cork University Hospital following a road accident on Thursday on the outskirts of Cork. Innishannon.
A man in his thirties, arrested and interrogated by the Gardaï after the plane crash, will appear in court in Bandon on Saturday.
Palmer, in his 60s, is the familiar voice on 103fm commentary for GAA local and national matches, and is a hugely popular figure in West Cork.
He’s overcome health issues in the past and is back in the comments this year. His energetic and illustrated play has earned him many admirers. He is also a read columnist for The Echo.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at around 10am at Dunkereen Cross near Upton on the Innishannon-Crossbarry road in County Cork.
The Gardaí closed the runway for several hours and local detours were made to allow for a technical review. Buddy Palmer was immediately transferred to Cork University Hospital, where his condition was described as “critical but stable” on Thursday.
His divine daughter, Claudine Keane, wife of former Ireland international Robbie, tweeted about the need to pray for “my beautiful and talented uncle Pawdie Palmer from Cork to Dublin and everywhere in between. One is fine.”
The Celtic Ross Hotel on the outskirts of Rosscarbury, where Paudie Palmer has hosted many awards ceremonies, added: “We are all praying for Paudie. We are in shock. The funniest, warmest and kindest guy. Wait Paudie…please. Think of the whole family.” «
Noted GAA referee Peter O’Leary also tweeted his best wishes, adding that he was in touch with Paudie on Wednesday. “I was travelling. He’s well respected and loved in Cork, for a Kerry man!”
Palmer is originally from Templinough on the outskirts of Kenmare.
