Two women is about to mark a historic milestone by becoming the first lesbian couple to form a family through adoption in our region.
These are Claudia Carrazana and Marisela Figueroa, from Antofagasta, who after 12 years building a home together and an enormous systematic and social challenge after unsuccessfully trying artificial fertilization, managed to process the process and desire for adoption at the Better Childhood Service.
“In a minute we did a procedure where Claudia got pregnant, but we lost the baby. The procedure is very expensive and it is also invasive, one is psychologically very bad in addition to the physical affectation, so we decided not to continue down that path. Since we met, there was always the option to adopt, despite having children or not biologically ”, Marisela counted.
According to El Mercurio de Antofagasta, Claudia would have started the adoption process independently, when the Equal Marriage Law in Chile had not yet been enacted.
“When I entered the system to adopt, I did it as a single mother because with our civil union agreement it was not possible. We went through the process without really knowing many things because one is not informed either (…) Within the process that we were postulating, equal marriage came out and clearly it is a different system, it is another category and since we had done the fertility process many times it was It asked for a requirement that one of the two had to be infertile, we obtained the certificate because we previously went through the medical process”Claudia explained.
According to the current Adoption Law in our country, Chilean and foreign couples residing in the country are prioritized, followed by couples abroad and, at the end of the list, singles, widows or divorcees.
In this regard, the head of the Adoption Unit of the Better Childhood Service, Patricia Campillay, indicated that “The logic of priority is that, if you have a child sentence, you have to look for the best alternative in the registry, in the event that a marriage is not found, you must make an international call and only if internationally no they have applicants, they work with singles. So it’s a long wait for them.”
