After two months in prison, former Interior Minister Claude Guéant left the Santé prison on Wednesday 9 February at 8:30 am in a car with tinted windows, his lawyer, Philippe Bouchez El Ghozi, confirmed to Agence France-Presse.
Claude Guéant, 77, was detained on December 13 for failing to pay the fine and damages he was ordered to pay in time in the case of cash bonuses from the Ministry of the Interior. On Monday, he was released on parole as part of a modification of his sentence that he had requested.
In support of his request for a modified sentence, his lawyer had argued that his client had “fully paid” his debt to the Treasury via loans granted by his relatives and that in prison, his “health situation [ne pouvait] to deteriorate, with regard to the triple pathology” from which he suffers.

When he was released from prison, he did not return for this last sentence: he appealed, which suspended the application of this penalty until a second trial.
