Classisco Celebrates 25 Years and Promotes Classical Music to Children

the essentials Classisco, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, promotes classical music to children. On December 7, 30 classes will attend a rehearsal of the Capitol directed by Tugan Sokhiev.

Founded 25 years ago by a few teachers and their friends, Classisco has today become a recognized and valuable educational institution for teachers and their students. This association has organized 350 classical music concerts in a quarter of a century, and welcomed around 160,000 students. “The beginnings were very modest. I was a teacher in Bellefontaine, for classes from CE2 to CM2” says the founder, Jean-Christophe Sellin.

“Between 1997 and 1999, I began to interest my students in classical music, a world that most of them did not know. In 99 we went to the Wagner festival in Bayreuth. It was an exceptional experience to enter the holy of holies of opera, we were welcomed there by the composer’s grandson! Another great memory is the recording of the double CD “At the heart of classical music”, in 2000, with Magyd Cherfi, the singer of Zebda, in the role of reciter. 20,000 records were printed and distributed free of charge to families. This CD is still in circulation.”

On December 7, some 700 CM1 and CM2 students will attend a rehearsal of the Orchester du Capitole with their emblematic former conductor Tugan Sokhiev, at the Halle aux Grains.

A very attentive audience

A privilege for around thirty classes from neighborhoods or rural communities. “There were other events this year, such as the concert “From Vivaldi to Harry Potter, with the Toulouse symphony chamber, an orchestra of 58 musicians in their twenties. Children are a very attentive audience, and the musicians have noticed this,” underlines Jean-Christophe Sellin. “Since the creation of the association we have filled the Zénith 10 times for concerts in the spirit of the music festival, mixing classical music and current music,” continues the volunteer coordinator and director of Classisco, who left his place as president to Eloïse Urbain, pianist and professor at the Conservatory.

On January 23, 90 nursery classes will take over the Halle aux Grains for “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky, a concert by the Toulouse Symphony Chamber. Classisco also has its location in Castelmaurou, where it will organize the 4th Bezin’Art festival, from June 6 to 8, 2024, three days of free concerts for all. “Nothing would be possible without the financial support of local authorities” insists Jean-Christophe Sellin. Good luck to Classisco and may it last a long time to the delight of the little people of Toulouse (and elsewhere).
