There are almost as many films about the festival of love as there are tinsel on a Christmas tree.

The most beautiful Christmas films of all time can include films that are traditionally part of the TV Christmas program, such as “Three Nuts for Cinderella” or films such as “Isn’t life beautiful?” That deal with the theme of Christmas in some way.

The magic of the Christmas movie

There are Christmas fans and Christmas grouches, but in childhood they all enjoyed one or two magical moments that Christmas had in store for us. Christmas films are a way to breathe new life into this “magic” every year.

The birth of a genre: the first Christmas film from 1898

A short silent film by George Albert Smith called “Santa Claus” is widely considered to be the first Christmas film. The representation of the “spirit of Christmas” is technically at the highest level of the time, but see for yourself:

Long-running favorite: “Isn’t life beautiful” (1946)

This Christmas classic by Frank Capra celebrated its US cinema premiere on Christmas Day many years ago and can still be seen annually on German TV today. The length of its popularity is a clear indicator that it must be one of the most beautiful Christmas films of all time. The socially critical Capra was a master of tragic comedy, whose work is still moving today. His well-known comedy “Arsenic with a lace cap” is also one of the standard programs on festive TV days. In his Christmas film you will learn a lot of useful things about the nature of guardian angels. In 2013 there were plans for a sequel of the story about the unlucky George Bailey, even parts of the original cast at the time are said to have been requested. The cinema should have been released in 2015, there is no news. Here are the first four minutes for a little insight – you can find the stream on Amazon.

With remake: “The Miracle of Manhattan”

A film that you can see twice, once in the original version from 1947 and as a remake from 1994. The story remains the same, but the original has only been copied insufficiently and lacks the satirical tips of the original. You can see and compare both films in the Netflix flat rate and make your own judgment.

„The Nightmare before Christmas“

The spindly king of Halloween Town kidnaps Santa Claus. This stop-motion artwork by Tim Burton was still on Netflix last year, this year you’ll have to switch to another provider. You can borrow it cheaply from Amazon, but you can also buy it.

“Not just at Christmas time”

Unfortunately not available anywhere, neither in the stream nor on DVD. The last TV broadcast of the adaptation of Heinrich Böll’s novel of the same name took place in 2005. That is a shame, because it is a bittersweet satire that puts our bigotry in relation to Christmas under the microscope. Aunt Milla loves Christmas so much that she can no longer part with the tree. A real festive rage boils inside her and this culminates in a daily Christmas festival – even in July. The film was directed by Vojtěch Jasný with Edith Heerdegen as Aunt Milla. The ZDF first broadcast it on December 30, 1970. Instead of the film, you can at least read the book or put it under the tree for someone else – Amazon has all variants, whether Kindle or audio book. “White Christmas”

The revue film is from 1954 and the song from the soundtrack “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby should really be known to everyone. But there are other songs included that will ring sweetly in your ears. The plot is about two singers who are successful in business and go to Vermont for a white Christmas. They have two sisters who are also artists. As soon as they arrive, things start to get turbulent for the four of them. Atmospheric and funny and at Amazon in every possible form.

“Three hazelnuts for Cinderella”

In the run-up to Christmas and at Christmas it is impossible to imagine TV without it, although this fairy tale film was actually supposed to be shot in summer and was never intended as a Christmas hit. You can find the broadcast times of “Drei Hazelnuts für Cschenbrödel” on TV and more information about the film under the link.

The tills never ring sweeter … 5 successes in German cinema

At this point we let the crowd do the talking and take a look at the most successful Christmas films in Germany.

  • “Santa Clause – a nice present” took first place with more than 1.7 million viewers. The two successors could not build on this success.
  • With over 1.5 million, “Der Polarexpress” is firmly in second place in the audience’s favor.
  • “A moose sprang up” wanted to see over 1.2 million in German cinemas.
  • “Bad Santa” is in fourth place with 160,000 tickets sold.
  • “Buddy – The Christmas Elf” was a huge success in the USA and was not so well received in this country, but with 145,000 spectators it was enough for a good fifth place.
