Classic Romantic Drama ‘It Started in the Tropics’ to Air on Andalucía Television

On the night of Tuesday, October 3, Andalucía Television viewers will be able to enjoy the film “It Started in the Tropics,” a romantic drama starring Carol Lombard and Fred MacMurray and in which the secondary characters Anthony Quinn and Dorothy Lamour stand out.

This 1937 film (Swing High, Swing Low), directed by Mitchell Leisen, is the second adaptation of the play ‘Burlesque’ and includes swing musical numbers.

The story begins during a cruise to Panama, when hairdresser Maggie King (Carol Lombard) meets soldier Skid Johnson (Fred MacMurray), who manages to convince her to go out with him to celebrate his last day as a soldier. Due to a brawl in a club with a stranger (Anthony Quinn) who tries to take Maggie, she misses the boat back to the United States and has no choice but to move in at Skid’s house.

Something more than a friendship will emerge between them and they both become part of an orchestra, she as a vocalist and he as a trumpeter. Skid’s fame makes him move to another city, it goes to his head and he ends up forgetting about Maggie and her friends. Furthermore, he will fall into the trap of his ex-girlfriend, a Latin American singer, Anita Alvarez (Dorothty Lamour), and will take to drinking.

This is the second of the three adaptations of ‘Burlesque’, of which two other versions were also filmed: “The Dance of Life”, by John Cromwell (1929), with Hal Skelly and Nancy Carroll; and Walter Lang’s “When My Baby Smiles at Me” (1948).

Broadcast date: Tuesday, October 3, at 11:00 p.m., on Andalucía Television (ATV).
