The famous Ninth by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was first performed in 1824. In this shot the 9th Symphony plays the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti.
Beethoven referenced Friedrich Schiller’s poem for his symphony To Joyfirst published in 1786. A little later, Beethoven thought about how to put it to music.
He was already widely known as a pianist, but due to increasing deafness from 1796 he turned to composing. as he dies Ninth he wrote, he was already deaf. On May 7, 1824, Beethoven shared his 9th symphony with the world, even though he never got to hear it. At the premiere he is said to have turned his back to the audience to read the words from the singers’ lips.
In the summers of 1821 to 1823, Beethoven worked on the important parts of the 9th symphony in Baden near Vienna. He opted for the use of a chorus in the finale, which was unusual for the time. Even after its completion in 1824 and even after the first performance, he considered whether it were not better to replace the choral finale with a purely instrumental finale.
