Class action lawsuit accuses French police of discrimination

PARIS (AP) – Six non-governmental organizations have announced the first class action lawsuit against the French government for alleged systematic discrimination by police in identity checks.

The organizations, which include Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, allege that the French police discriminate in identity checks, targeting people of black or Arab origin. The NGOs are not demanding financial compensation, but rather deep reforms to ensure that racial discrimination does not determine who the police stop.

The letters that officially notified the process to the prime minister and the heads of Interior and Justice would be delivered on Wednesday. The organizations planned to hold a press conference in Paris on the case.
