Tensions erupted when two groups gathered near the monument. One – in order to wrap the monument in Ukrainian and Bulgarian flags in protest against the war in Ukraine. The others are supporters of Bulgaria’s neutral position.

The attempt of some of the demonstrators to wrap the monument with the Bulgarian and Ukrainian flags failed. They were interrupted by protesters waving Bulgarian and Russian flags. The two groups were separated by a cordon of police officers who quelled tensions.
