A Hungarian soldier of the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo, KeyFOR, who was injured during the clashes in northern Kosovo on May 29, has had his leg amputated, Hungarian media reported, citing the Koha ditore newspaper. According to information from the Hungarian Ministry of National Defense, the operation went well and the soldier’s condition is stable, BTA reported.
Kosovo Serbs in the northern Kosovo municipalities of Zvechan, Leposavich and Zubin Potok, where they are the majority, began daily protests from May 26 in front of municipal buildings. They are protesting the Albanian mayors in these municipalities, who were elected in local elections with a voter turnout of 3.5 percent, as Serbs boycotted the vote. On 29 May, there were clashes between protesters, police and NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo, KFOR, injuring around 30 KFOR soldiers and around 50 Kosovo Serbs.
In its statement after the clashes at the end of May, KFOR said that several soldiers from KFOR’s Italian and Hungarian contingents were the targets of unprovoked attacks and were injured, with injuries including fractures and burns due to the explosion of explosive devices.
According to information from the Hungarian Ministry of National Defense, most of the wounded Hungarian soldiers on May 29 have returned to their homes, but the condition of two others remains serious and they are still being treated in hospital. Tensions between Serbia and its former province have continued since Kosovo declared independence in 2008.
