Clashes Erupt in Batam Due to Land Surveying for Rempang Eko City Project – Situation Now Conducive, Says Head of Riau Islands Police

Jakarta

The Head of the Riau Islands Police (Kepri) Inspector General Tabana Bangun confirmed that the situation was conducive after residents of Rempang Island, Kota Batam, Riau Islands, had clashed with the authorities. It is known that the clashes were triggered by land surveying activities for the development of the Rempang Eko City project.

“The activity went well and nothing crucial happened. The community has also realized and returned to their respective homes, and the members have not had any prominent activities in the field,” said Tabana after inspecting the location, reported BetweenThursday (7/9/2023).

Tabana said today’s security activities had been completed. Then the security personnel have also been directed back to their respective units.

“Tonight’s activities have been completed. Because the community has understood about this activity and returned home well and the personnel will rest back to their respective units,” he said.

Regarding the commotion, according to him the actions taken by the personnel were appropriate. Because previously socialization and appeals to the public regarding the development of the island had been carried out.

“As for maybe there were things that were a little disturbing, that is the impact of this security,” he said.

“Hopefully in the future it can be more conducive as we expect,” he added.

Previously, the Batam Concession Agency (BP) appealed to the people of Batam City not to be provoked by skewed issues related to measurements to be carried out in the Rempang Area.

This is in line with the circulation of information related to the repressive actions of the joint team consisting of the National Police, TNI, Ditpam BP Batam, and Satpol PP against the community which obstructed the personnel’s duties.

Head of BP Batam Promotion and Protocol Public Relations Bureau Ariastuti Sirait revealed that the incident that actually happened was not the case. According to him, the community on behalf of the Rempang residents first threw stones and glass bottles at the security personnel who were about to enter the Barelang 4 Bridge area.

In fact, a number of irresponsible persons also continued to throw stones even though the police officers had appealed through loudspeakers so that the masses would not be hasty in taking action.

Information from the team on the ground, several provocateurs have been arrested by the police. Some of them were even found carrying machetes and have been arrested,” he said in Batam, reported by Antara.
