Clashes erupt between Kurds and police in Paris

Not far from Piazza della Repubblica, where a mostly peaceful demonstration had previously taken place, protesters overturned several cars and lit small fires.

The clashes began when, leaving the square, some demonstrators started throwing various objects at the police, to which the security guards responded with tear gas.

As reported, around noon on Friday an attacker opened fire on the Kurdish cultural center in Paris’ 10th arrondissement on rue D’Engien, killing three people and wounding three others.

According to the Kurdish Democratic Council of France (CDK-F), one woman and two men were among the dead.

Emine Kara was the leader of the French Kurdish women’s movement murdered, although her asylum claim was rejected.

One of the men killed was also a political refugee and the other was an artist.

The 69-year-old attacker, arrested after the shooting, later admitted to police that he was a “racist”.

Already on Friday, a few hours after the attack, clashes broke out between the Kurds and the police.

Rioters had to use tear gas to disperse rioters trying to break through the police line to gain access to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen, who had arrived on the scene.

Protesters smashed the windows of nearby cars, including police vehicles, with bricks.
