Jakarta –
Clashes broke out between the troops Taliban and Iran on the Afghanistan-Iran border. Two people were reported dead.
Reported AFPSaturday (27/5/2023) Iranian police confirmed this without providing details of the victims. Meanwhile, the local news agency Mehr reported that an Iranian border guard was killed.
Both sides are said to have blamed each other for firing first.
“In the clashes, one person was killed on each side and many were injured,” Interior Ministry Spokesman Abdul Nafy Takor tweeted about the incident in the southwestern province of Nimroz.
“This issue has been brought to the attention of leaders on both sides and now the situation is under control. The Islamic Emirate does not want war with its neighbours,” he added.
Furthermore, Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Deputy Chief of Police, Qassem Rezaee, said that Taliban forces started shooting with all kinds of weapons at an Iranian police station, in Sistan-Baluchistan province.
The Tasnim news agency reported that light and semi-light guns and artillery were used in the clashes.
Although Tehran and Kabul are bound by diplomatic ties, the Islamic republic of Iran does not recognize the Afghan government of Kabul. Relations between the two have recently been strained over a water dispute.
Last week, Iran demanded that Afghanistan respect its “right to water”, and alleged that river dams upstream were restricting the flow to lakes crossing their common border.
