Clashes between police and protesters in Chisinau

Protesters clashed with police in the Moldovan capital, Chisinaureports TASS.

Law enforcement agencies blocked the way of a column of thousands of opposition sympathizers to the city’s central square.

The demonstrators tried to break through the police cordon. Protesters called for the ouster of pro-Western president Maya Sandhu.

The Point publication published a video showing a crowd moving towards the center of Chisinau as the buses that brought them to the protest from the countryside were stopped by the police.

The opposition rally organized by the pro-Russian party “Shor” with the main demand being to compensate the citizens for the inflation that has befallen the poorest country in Europe.

The protesters tried to break through the cordon next to the parliament building. Only Marina Tauber, vice-president of the “Shor” party, together with several other representatives, were allowed to the government building to convey the demands of the protest – the adopted resolution demanding that the government pay the utility bills of all citizens for the winter months.

A day earlier, local police warned that the protests could lead to “acts of destabilization and mass disorder”. According to the information of the Chief Police Inspectorate smashed action coordinated with the Russian special services, in which groups of 5 to 10 people wedge themselves into the protest. Participants were to receive $10,000 each. 25 people have been documented and 7 people have been detained as leaders of the action, Viorel Chernutianu announced at a police briefing for the media.

Last week the party organized a rally with the request Modova not to be drawn into the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Shortly before that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev has intercepted the plans of the Russian special services to destabilize Moldova.

Russia called the accusations an attempt by Moldovan authorities to divert public attention from their own economic and social failures. At the same time, however, the Kremlin warned sharp on the topic of Transnistria.

On March 10, White House spokesman John Kirby said that the US administration would provide Moldova with $300 million in energy aid and will share intelligence with the authorities about Moscow’s attempts to destabilize the situation in the former Soviet republic.
