Around 700 people took part in the demonstration on Saturday, and around 235 of them have now been arrested. The demonstration was against the closure in Melbourne.
2,000 police officers were deployed, who, among other things, were to try to prevent protesters from reaching the center. The demonstrations became more and more violent, and the police eventually used pepper spray. The police also had to close parts of roads and stop public transport.
Melbourne is now undergoing its sixth shutdown since the pandemic began. Across the state of Victoria, more than 500 corona cases were reported on Saturday.
Authorities have announced that most of the restrictions imposed in Victoria, New South Wales and the capital Canberra will continue to apply until at least 70 per cent of the population, aged 16 and over, have been vaccinated against covid-19.
