Clashes and Violence in Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian Refugee Camp in Sidon, Lebanon – Latest Updates

Beirut, August 2, 2023 (Xinhua) One person was killed and two injured, as armed clashes renewed this evening (Wednesday) in Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in Sidon, southern Lebanon, between members of the “Fatah” movement and Islamist activists, according to the official Lebanese National News Agency.

The renewed clashes that had erupted between the two sides last Saturday night came after a cease-fire and cautious calm that lasted about 24 hours.

And the official Lebanese news agency reported that one person was killed and two wounded in the continuous evening clashes in the camp on three axes, with medium machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

The agency indicated that shells and stray bullets fell this evening in the vicinity of the government hospital in the city of Sidon, the Arab roundabout, Sahl al-Sabbagh, and the eastern highway in the city, as a result of the clashes inside the Ain al-Hilweh camp.

An agreement was reached yesterday (Tuesday) at a meeting of the “Palestinian Joint Action Authority” for a cease-fire and an end to the clashes.

Media reports had stated that the clashes between Fatah movement and Islamic activists, since the start of the camp events last Saturday, resulted in the death of 11 people and the wounding of more than 40, in addition to the great destruction of homes, properties, shops, and cars.

The head of the caretaker government in Lebanon, Najib Mikati, confirmed the day before yesterday (Monday) seeking to stop the ongoing clashes in the Ain al-Hilweh camp, rejecting what is happening in it because it “consecrates the camp as a focus outside the control of the state.”

And large reinforcements of the Lebanese army arrived yesterday evening in the city of Sidon to reinforce the army points and centers located at the entrances to the camp and its surroundings.

The spark of the clashes erupted last Saturday night after the killing of an Islamic activist and the wounding of another, and then things escalated the next day following the assassination of the Palestinian National Security Commander in Sidon, Major General Abu Ashraf Al-Armoushi, in an armed ambush.

Ain al-Hilweh camp, which is one of the largest Palestinian camps in Lebanon, witnesses bombings, assassinations and armed clashes from time to time, due to the political conflict, control and security influence between a number of factions and organizations.
