The bulk of the manifestation of Paris, the March for liberties, came to the Bastille , theater of clashes more significant. Today was the first day of “lightening” of the lockdown, and tens of thousands of French have decided to take to the streets.
On the sidelines, groups of young people gave birth to scuffles with the police blocking the procession from time to time. Some shops damaged, bins, stones and bottles on fire against the policemen who responded with a dense throw of tear gas. In the clashes that broke out during the demonstration against the global security law, some cars were also damaged and set on fire. The website of Le Parisien reports this by publishing photos that, on social media, show at least two cars set on fire and a Mercedes attacked by demonstrators dressed in black, with covered faces, who destroyed the windows and jumped on the windshield, shattering it. S37 agents were injured in clashes in several French citiesthe police, said the Minister of the Interior, Gerard Darmarin, stressing that the death toll is still provisional. Demonstrations were held in 70 cities in all. “I condemn once again the unacceptable violence against the police,” said the minister. Nine people have been stopped so far by the French police while the police are trying to clear out, even with the use of fire hydrants, the demonstrators who remained in the place de la Bastille area, where the clashes took place.

What’s going on in France? Dozens of parades were organized today throughout the country, not only in Paris but also in Strasbourg, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Rennes. Protesters are protesting against the law under discussion in Parliament on “global security” that the organizers consider “liberticide”. At the heart of the protest is article 24 of the law banning photos and videos of policemen in action. “Smile, you are filmed!” it read on a large sign carried by a group of boys who were always very visible. From time to time, choirs hostile to the police, “We all hate the police” the most popular. Many journalists were present and representatives of editorial offices – such as those of Le Monde and Paris Match – not only to cover the events but to express their dissent with the government.
To exaggerate spirits too the episodes of violence in recent days, the eviction of migrants from the place de la Republique with the use of batons and, last Saturday, the beating of Michel Zecler, a black music producer, by 4 agents, forced into his recording studio in Paris. The four policemen have been in custody since yesterday. And the precautionary measure was extended by 24 hours.
Since Thursday the four agents have been suspended from their posts and an investigation has been opened for violence and forgery in public deed. The violence exercised by the police against Zecler, guilty only of not wearing the mask, emerged thanks to a video published by the Loopsider news site, and today sparked protests across France. According to press sources, the four policemen defended the legitimacy of their action, denying in particular that they had shouted racist insults against Zecler.
It happened on Saturday in Paris. 15 minutes of racist beatings and insults.
The crazy scene of police violence that we reveal is simply amazing and uplifting.
We have to look at it to the end to understand the full extent of the problem. pic.twitter.com/vV00dOtmsg

Today’s protests focus on the article of the law on global security, under discussion in Parliament, which prohibits the filming of police actions. Three police officers are directly involved in Zecler’s assault and the fourth for throwing a tear gas grenade into the studio.

What the law of discord says
Approved in the Assemblée Nationale last week, it must now pass to the Senate but many are pressing for a withdrawal of art. 24, the one that would punish the dissemination of images of policemen or gendarmes capable of damaging immortalized people with a year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros. For the organizers of the March of liberties, the law “violates the freedom of the press, the freedom to inform and to be informed, the freedom of expression, in short, the fundamental public freedoms of our Republic”. The intent, for the government, is to protect policemen who are victims of hate speech and death threats on social networks. The government is now at a crossroads, with an interior minister openly referred to as a “right wing”, and two very serious cases of violence documented by images in a single week – first against migrants, then against the defenseless black music producer – which precipitated the situation. Emmanuel Macron he spoke of “images of shame”.
The government is under pressure, even from within the majority of La République en Marche, to eliminate article 24. “If today there is one thing to do to save honor – said former President Hollande – not is to keep this text, but to withdraw it ».
As pressure builds on the government, tension is erupting in the streets: a fire has been set in the Banque de France in Bastille square. The streets adjacent to the “March of liberties” route, between République and Bastille, were closed by police armored vehicles from early morning. Sources from the Alliance police union complain that only 2,000 officers were called into service to deal with a “high-risk” demonstration in which 40,000 demonstrators are expected and infiltration of radical elements of the yellow vests and black-blocs are feared.
