UNRWA said in a statement that “7 of its employees working in the clinic of Ain El-Hilweh camp showed symptoms of illness shortly after they drank coffee. They were immediately taken to the hospital, where they received the necessary treatment. Five of them were discharged this afternoon.” Hospital Two staff members are still in the hospital and their condition is stable.
Initial laboratory tests showed that there was no poisoning caused by any chemicals (such as insecticides, medicine or any other toxic compound). It appears that the cause of the symptoms is due to food poisoning.
UNRWA indicated that it “understands some of the fears and tension felt by the staff, which led to many rumors about poisoning, but stresses that no other motives behind these symptoms have been confirmed. UNRWA wishes its seven staff a speedy recovery in the hope that they will resume receiving patients again in the clinic.” Ain al-Hilweh soon.
