Al-Marsad Newspaper: The Food and Drug Authority in Saudi Arabia stated through its official account on the “Twitter” website that there are two types of cinnamon, namely Ceylon cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon.
The authority emphasized that both types are allowed to be used. The second type, Cinnamon Cassia, is the most used in food products. As for toxicity, it is caused by the presence of coumarin, the consumption of which in large quantities and for a long time leads to negative effects on human health.
The second type of cinnamon contains more coumarin than the first type, Ceylon cinnamon.
Scientific reports indicate that consuming cinnamon of the second type as a spice in food, and in the usual ways, may not lead to health problems.
However, the authority recommends moderation in the consumption of drinks and foods that contain cinnamon of the second type, in order to avoid any health symptoms that may occur as a result of consuming a higher than recommended amount of coumarin.
