It’s over for the tricolor representatives in New York. Last in the running, Clara Burel and Arthur Rinderknech were both eliminated during the last matches of the third round, Saturday September 2, on the courts of Flushing Meadows. There will be no French in the second week in the singles tables, as at Wimbledon and Roland-Garros.
Arthur Rinderknech (73rd) had however started well by pocketing the first set against Andrey Rublev, eighth player in the world, in 35 minutes. But the native of Gassin then fell into line and saw the Russian take control of the game to win, despite a fourth and last set hanging (3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5) .
After having shattered the hopes of Arthur Cazaux and Gaël Monfils, Andrey Rublev continued his successful run against the Habs. Author of a solid start to the tournament and defeating Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini (on retirement), Rinderknech stops in the third round but still signs his best performance in Grand Slam.
Burel was no match for Sabalenka
Earlier in the afternoon, the last tricolor representative in the women’s draw, Clara Burel, could not face Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian, second player in the world (and potential number one at the end of the tournament), did not go into detail against the 22-year-old Breton. On the Louis Armstrong court, it was Aryna Sabalenka who dictated the pace, without missing a beat.
Winner in two hasty sets (6-1, 6-1), in barely an hour, Aryna Sabalenka did not leave the slightest hope to the young Frenchwoman, already eliminated in the third round in New York last season, already by the Belarusian. The Frenchwoman can notably regret the many points lost on service, even if she recovered in the second set.
