Jakarta –
SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19, is said to have been deliberately engineered as a bioweapon by China. This statement is claimed by a researcher at the renowned Wuhan Institute of Virology.
In an interview conducted by Chinese-born human rights activist and author Jennifer Zeng, the researcher, who goes by the name Chao Shao, claimed that researchers were tasked with identifying the strains that were most effective at spreading between different species, including humans.
Shao also recounted an incident involving another researcher at the institute named Shan Chao, who claimed to have been given four types of coronavirus by his superiors to test and determine which one had the greatest potential to infect many species, including humans.
Shao said some of his colleagues were sent to hotels housing athletes during the 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan under the pretext of “checking health or hygiene conditions”. However, he suspects they could potentially be involved in spreading the virus.
Nonetheless, the researcher who claims China made COVID for the bioweapon emphasizes that this information represents only a small part of the puzzle. The true origins of the pandemic, which has claimed the lives of 7 million people worldwide, remain the subject of ongoing investigation.
Previously a newly declassified intelligence report by the US government on the origins of COVID-19 also did not confirm whether the COVID-19 pandemic was the result of a laboratory leak or the virus was transmitted to humans from infected animals.
“All agencies continue to judge that natural and laboratory-related origins remain plausible hypotheses to explain the first human infection. Assess that SARS-CoV-2 was not genetically engineered,” said the report, quoted by The Economic Times.
“Most institutions judge that SARS-CoV-2 was not adapted in the laboratory; some cannot make a decision. All agencies of the intelligence community judge that SARS-CoV-2 was not developed as a biological weapon,” he added.
The report acknowledges research conducted in laboratories, including animal sampling and genetic analysis.
“We continue to have no indication that WIV’s pre-pandemic research holdings included SARS-CoV-2 or a close progenitor, or direct evidence that certain research-related incidents occurred involving WIV personnel prior to the pandemic that could lead to a Covid pandemic,” the report said. .
