Claims for cards to the Bank of Spain already exceed those for accounts and deposits

Until September, the Bank of Spain processed 14,543 claims, a volume that is almost equal to that of all of 2019

MADRID, 1 (EUROPA PRESS)

Claims related to cards that citizens have submitted to the Bank of Spain continue to rise and in 2020 they already exceed those related to accounts and deposits, ranking only behind mortgage claims.

This is reflected in the latest statistics on the Citizen Service of the Bank of Spain consulted by Europa Press, which collects data until September 2020.

Cards were already the category that grew the most in claims during 2019 (+ 40.1%), placing in third place, accounting for 17.9% of the total, compared to 9.5% they represented in 2018. Said The increase, as explained by the Bank of Spain, responded to the growth of complaints about fraudulent operations and about revolving cards.

Between January and September there was a new increase, so that claims for cards now reach 24.44% of the total complaints submitted by citizens to the supervisory body. Although the Bank of Spain has not yet detailed why the increase is due, it should be recalled that in March the Supreme Court ruled on usury in ‘revolving’ card contracts with interest rates above 20%.

Ahead of the cards and within a short distance, only mortgage claims remain, with 26.9% of the total (in 2019 they represented 30.6% and in 2018 more than 70%), while claims for accounts and deposits They have moved to a third position, with 23.8% of claims, despite the fact that this share has grown by more than four points compared to 2019 as a whole.

GUARANTEES GAIN WEIGHT AND PERSONAL LOANS LOSE IT

The increase in claims related to guarantees is also notable, which in 2019 represented 0.6% of all claims and in 2020 they are 1.91% of the total, in a context in which entities have channeled guaranteed financing by the Official Credit Institute (ICO) to face the coronavirus pandemic.

Regarding the rest of matters, the data from the Bank of Spain show that claims for transfers have gained weight, which is 4.06% of the total, while personal loans represent 6.3% of claims (in 2019 they were 8.7%), cash 1.56% (compared to 2.4%) and SMEs 1.33% (compared to 1.4%).

FORESEEABLE INCREASE IN CLAIMS IN 2020

From the data consulted by Europa Press it also appears that the claims filed with the Bank of Spain at the end of 2020 will foreseeably exceed those of the 2019 financial year, since between January and September the body received 14,543 claims, a volume that almost equates to that of all 2019, when 14,638 complaints were processed.

What has decreased is the percentage of resolutions favorable to the claimant, which in 2019 was 71.57%, while in the first nine months of 2020 it stood at 66.36%.

By provinces, this year more claims were filed until September in Madrid (3,082), Barcelona (1,181), Seville (921), Valencia (904), Alicante (583), Malaga (528) and A Coruña (461).
