NEW YORK — CJ Abrams hit the go-ahead home run off Tommy Kahnle with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the New York Yankees 2-1 Tuesday night, who lost nine in a row for the first time in 41 years.
New York, which has not won since August 11, when it visited Miami, is going through its first nine-game losing streak since the period from September 13 to 21, 1982. That was the last month of a 79-win campaign, in which the club employed three managers (Bob Lemon, Gene Michael and Clyde King).
Abrams broke the 1-1 tie by finding Kahnle’s (1-2) first offer, a speed changeup, and sending the ball sticking to the right-field foul pole. The speedy shortstop hit 13 home runs this year.
Six of those hits have given Washington the lead.
The Yankees also fell to 12-27 since July 4, when they were 10 games over .500.
Mason Thompson (4-4) forced DJ LeMahieu to fly out to the first pitch to strand a runner in the seventh inning. Kyle Finnegan also left a runner pining in the ninth for his 22nd save in 29 chances.
For the Nationals, the Mexican Joey Meneses 2-0. The Venezuelans Keibert Ruiz 4-1, Ildemaro Vargas 4-2.
For the Yankees, Venezuelans Gleyber Torres 4-0, Everson Pereira 3-0, Oswald Peraza 4-0.
