Canals occupy a square on the map like other structures. They can be built to connect not only cities on land, but also to create sea routes where the land was initially divided by seas and oceans.
Let’s hope that in Civ 7, building canals will allow you to create even more interesting solutions. Especially if navigable rivers appear in the game. This will make Civ’s strategic layer even deeper and introduce a ton of new solutions.
