Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Have you watched the movie Don’t Look Up on Netflix? If you already know, astronomer from a campus finds a comet that threatens Earth and reports its findings to the space agency.
In astronomical work like the case above, it is very possible for cooperation between parties to make new findings. This work is mostly done by professional astronomers, but there are occasions where members of the public also help.
Well, recently a number of civilians helped comb through data from NASA’s telescopes to identify planet a gas giant located 379 light years away.
This team of civilian scientists used data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to identify the planet TOI-2180 b. The planet orbits a star with a mass similar to the Sun in the human solar system, with an orbital period of 261 days.
This planet is similar to Jupiter, as one of the gas giant planets found outside the solar system.
“Finding and publishing TOI 2180 b was a large group effort that demonstrated that professional astronomers and experienced citizen scientists can work together. This is the best synergy,” said one of the civilian scientists Tom Jacobs who volunteered for the project.
Keep in mind, there are many exoplanet aka planets outside the solar system that are visible by looking for transits or specific times when a planet passes between a star and Earth.
