Čivič said that Slovan has an excellent team

In the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, the place on the Groupama Arena turf belonged to him, last week he sat in the stands of the Ferencváros stadium. Michal Škvarka, who celebrated winning the title in the famous Budapest club in both mentioned years, came to personally watch the first match of the 2nd preliminary round of the Champions League Ferencváros – Slovan Bratislava (1:2).

EXCELLENT MOVES

The experienced midfielder, who spent last season in Poland’s Wisla Krakow, enjoyed the match. “I expected that it would be something completely different for Slovan than in the 1st preliminary round against Batumi. I thought it would be a drawn duel, or it would end with a difference of one goal. So my expectations were more or less fulfilled. Two top teams with quality players met.” said the 29-year-old student of Žilina football.

The expert public appreciated the fact that Slovan was able to eliminate the opponent’s offensive power. Many expected that the home team would have many chances against the “Whites”, but with the exception of a goal, they threatened rather from standard situations and shots from a distance.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a complete shock to me. This is how Ferencváros plays for a long time. It is not a team that outright thrashes opponents. Rather, he always waits for his chances, which can take advantage of the strong individuality of the team. That was also the case when ‘Fradi’ took the lead in the second half.

I just thought that with the first goal the home team would be even more aggressive, they would create more chances, but it was rather the opposite. Slovan was getting into break situations and used two,” stated Michal Škvarka.

And he continued: “Slovan showed that he has great individuality and also that coach Vladimír Weiss can make excellent decisions, he helped the team a lot with substitutions. He sent ready and fresh players to the field.”

Many experts claim that the victory of Slovan is also a consequence of the fact that coach Vladimír Weiss st. surpassed Ferencváros coach Stanislav Čerčesov. “I don’t know if I would say it that way. However, Vladimír Weiss performed really excellent tactical moves. But who else, if not him? A coach with vast experience…” Michal Škvarka voiced these opinions.

Words of appreciation from the side of the Hungarian champion were heard in the media addressing the people of Bratislava. “I was mainly in contact with defender Eldar Čivič, who also played in Trnava in the past. We talked before and after the game. Thanks to him, I also had tickets to the match. He told me that Slovan has an excellent team. Simply, he appreciated the quality of the opponent. He was just surprised how Slovan, given his strength, was cornered.” added the former captain of Žilina.

The fact is that Slovan did not succeed only thanks to careful defense. After winning the ball, the people of Bratislava were able to threaten. “It was obvious that they had prepared it well. They launched quick counterattacks from the defense and several were promising. Rematch will be difficult for both teams, everything is open.” commented former midfielder “Fradi” Michal Škvarka.

GREAT PEOPLE

Especially the first season in Hungary is one of the most successful periods in Michal Škvarek’s career. In the 2019/20 season, Ferencváros with Michal Škvark won the title, reached the Europa League group, where they took third place with seven points in competition with Espanyol, Ludogorca Razgrad and CSKA Moscow.

Our midfielder played in four matches. “For me personally, it was nice to come back. Believe me I love it there. I like Ferencváros and the people who work at the club. I enjoyed it very much, the atmosphere at the match was excellent,” he stated.

In the Hungarian club, Michal Škvarka experienced not only nice moments. In the 2020/21 season, he won another title with “Fradi” and the team qualified for the Champions League, but the experienced midfielder did not play in its group stage and also made only eleven starts in the league. Nevertheless, he remembers Ferencváros only in good terms.

“It’s thanks to the people who make up the club. Everyone was fair and direct, no one did anything behind their back. I remember everyone very fondly, from the lady to the cleaners to President Gábor Kubatov.

The approach of the Ferencváros staff reminded me very much of what I encountered during my time in Žilina. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s how I felt that Ferencváros is popular in all of Hungary,” said Michal Škvarka.

We also asked him what moments were the most beautiful for him during his time with the southern neighbors: “I can’t forget the match at Honvéd, in which we won the title 2-0 and I managed to score into Tomáš Tujvel’s net.

I like to remember all the meetings on the international stage. It was always a great experience. I especially like to go back in my mind to the duel with Espanyol (2:2), in which I gave Diego Lopez a goal from the penalty spot.”

Would Michal Škvarka ever return to Ferencváros? We received a clear answer to a clear question: “I won’t lie, I sure do.”

PREFERS ABROAD

Last season, Michal Škvarka already worked in Wisla Kraków, for which he played 28 matches in the Polish Ekstraklasa, scoring two goals in them, but despite this, he cannot remember the past year fondly. The Krakow club finished penultimate, relegated to the second league, and the experienced midfielder is looking for a new job. At the beginning, it was led in Poland by our coach Adrian Guľa, who was replaced by Jerzy Brzeczek in February.

“Unfortunately, it turned out badly for the club and also for us players. We are all very sorry. No one imagined that such a brand as Wisla could go down. That’s how football is. We all did our best to change it, including coach Adrian Gula. The management thought that a change of coach would help. I don’t have the feeling that it would really be like that… Since his arrival, we have won only one league match.” Michal Škvarka was interviewed.

And he continued: “I don’t know what to look for. The introduction was great, we played well and had results. However, there were injuries, in the winter some transfers of key players such as the former captain of Trenčín Achraf El Mahdioui and Yaw Yeboah. With the new coach, excellent players arrived, the club brought in about four great reinforcements after the departure of Adrian Gula, we had an even better team, but we still couldn’t get going.”

The former under-21 national team is currently looking for a new job. “I’ve been home for a while now. I would prefer to train with the team. Probably no football player likes the period when he just runs along the embankment and goes to the gym. They’re eating me at home, but we’re working things out and we’ll see what happens.

The fact that the process of terminating the contract in Wisla was dragging on also slowed me down a bit. It took a while to find common ground on the details of the terms on which we would part. The final decision fell about two weeks ago. I believe that soon I will have a new club,” stated Michal Škvarka, who today is not thinking about returning to our top competition.

“I prefer abroad,” he added in conclusion.
