City’s Deputy Mayor Expresses Concern as Migration Crisis Grows

It will be difficult to stay afloat if we continue to receive this number of people said the city’s deputy mayor for health and humanitarian services, Anne Williams-Isom.

This during the presentation with the asylum application help center about the state of the migration crisis in the city.

According to the director of the mayor’s asylum application help center, Masha Gindler, they have submitted 3,800 applications since it opened in June.

However, for those immigrants who missed the one-year deadline, they suggest they find a lawyer.

Attorney Jodi Z, Immigration Program Director of the NYLAG organization:

“There are still protections that are available for people who have passed this year and there are also exceptions in the law for some people who have passed this year.”

Immigration attorney Jodi Ziesemer of the nonprofit New York Legal Assistance Group says the majority of cases that come to her office are from immigrants who are unaware of the application rules.

For her part, Governor Kathy Hochul said that more social workers are needed to collect information on the housing status and asylum requests of these immigrants. For which the state added a budget of 36 million dollars.

While the city waits for $100 million from the federal government approved in June.

“Asylum law in the United States is very complicated…

The lawyer says it is important for people to have all the necessary documents before seeing a lawyer.”

“Because we need to see what your documents say to give you good advice about your options,” adds Ziesemer.

Despite the number of people needing help from a lawyer, I add that the organization continues to prepare so that more immigrants benefit from free legal advice.

“We are working with the city and the state of New York to provide information and workshops to offer to inform people and to extend help to each person who needs,” indicates the lawyer.
