City trip New York: tips & tricks to get the most out of ‘The Big Apple’

Prepare well for a city trip to New York. There is so much to do that you can easily fill two weeks, but usually your wallet, your leave or other obligations do not allow you to stay the full two weeks. Before you leave, therefore, go through these ‘tips & tricks’ and you will get the most out of your holiday to New York!

Top of the Rock: perfect view of the Empire State Building

One of the most famous buildings in New York is undoubtedly the Empire State Building. It is a skyscraper of 381 meters high and on both the 82nd and the 102nd (the highest) floor you can enjoy an amazing view over the city. Your first reflex would therefore be – as many travel agencies recommend and offer – to buy entrance tickets to the building before you leave. But cross that off your list!

The most famous view of New York, which you see in almost all photos, is a view with the Empire State Building on it. Does the bell ring? You can’t have that view if you’re standing on the only building you recognize, of course. It is therefore much more worthwhile to go to Top of the Rock, the top of the Rockefeller Center. There you can enjoy an astonishing view over the city, with the most famous building in sight!

Stopping at the Statue of Liberty on your way to Ellis Island?

The answer to that question is: no. The boat that takes you to Ellis Island makes a stop at the Statue of Liberty. You may or may not get off, but why would you? You are then on a far too small island with far too many people around you hurting your neck because you have to look up so steeply. You just want a nice picture of the statue but you don’t take it from the inside so why spend your money on that? Feel free to stay on the boat that takes you to Ellis Island and let the other tourists regret it afterwards.

What to do on Ellis Island? If you are interested in America’s colonial history, it is well worth a visit to the island as you will learn the American story of immigration. In addition, the building is also good for some nice photos. Not interested in Ellis Island but do you still want a nice view of the skyline of NY with the Statue of Liberty in the background? Then take the free Staten Island Ferry ferry and get that view for free! Recommendation: take the ferry in the evening and you have a beautiful skyline-picture of New York City by night.

bit of art: who’s in?

In terms of art, there are two must-sees: The Guggenheim Museum and the MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art. In the first you can find modern art, but even for those who are not really interested in the exhibitions, a visit is definitely worth it. The building is also a work of art in itself due to its special design. It is a spiral shape that continues both inside and out and the exhibits are displayed on the slope of the spiral. The central part is closed off at the top by a beautiful skylight.

The MoMA is probably the world’s leading museum of modern and contemporary art. If you want to visit, it is best to check in advance what you definitely want to see. The museum is so large that you won’t get much out of your visit if you walk around unprepared and at your leisure.

Want to see the bridge? Metro there, back on foot

Would you like to see one of the bridges in New York? Then take the metro and come back on foot. It is usually a short walk and therefore it is smarter to take the metro there and the way back on foot. If you go on foot, you probably don’t feel like walking all the way back, but it’s on that way back that you get to see the beautiful view of the New York skyline.

Some bridges that are worth a closer look are the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. The latter bridge does not yet have a pedestrian or bicycle path, but it can be viewed from a car or bus. The bridge is more than four kilometers long so it would take you a while on foot! It is also the only bridge not connected to Manhattan and is best known for the annual start of the New York Marathon.

Don’t buy food poor

You can find something for every big or small hunger when you walk around New York. However, the price you pay for this can be seriously disappointing. Sometimes you can easily pay 75 dollars per person for a dinner or if you go for breakfast in some hip coffee bar, you might spend 25 dollars on breakfast alone. In addition, it is also the normal course of business that a ‘tip‘, or a tip, will be charged. So don’t be shocked if suddenly there is an extra 10 dollars in your account.

Therefore choose a pizzeria or a burger restaurant, for example, they are often still affordable and tasty. If you are lucky with the weather, it is of course also nice to walk into the supermarket and put together a picnic for example. In supermarket chain Wholefoods can find buffets of both salads and hot meals from which you can compose your own meal and scoop it into a bowl. For lovers of rice and curry it is worth a visit to Chinatown walk because you are cheaper there Chinese food will find than in the busy streets of Manhattan for example.

If you’re in New York, it’s definitely worth going to a Broadway musical. The classic is of course The Lion King but there are dozens of other options as well. Many travel agencies recommend purchasing tickets in advance to ensure your spot. Be careful because you will lose a lot of money anyway.

It doesn’t really matter to you which musical you are going to see, then it is better to go to a ticket box on Broadway on the spot. It is best to do this just before opening time so that you are the first at the counter. You will then be presented with different options in terms of price, show and seating and with a bit of luck you can still go to your first choice for a decent price!
