The Zurich City Council unanimously provided CHF 20 million on Wednesday to help companies manage their rental costs. The prerequisite is that the tenant and landlord agree to a temporary reduction in the net rent by two thirds.

The city pays a third of the monthly net rental costs up to a maximum of 8333 francs. The contributions should be paid out by the end of April. However, if necessary, an extension of the measure is possible as long as the fund of 20 million francs has not been exhausted.

According to the directive, companies that have been affected by an officially ordered company closure since December 1, 2020 are eligible. Or those who recorded a corona-related drop in sales of at least a third between December 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021 compared to the same period of the previous year.

If one day a relief package for business rents is put together at the cantonal or federal level, the city can request the tenants to make use of it. The resulting income would then have to be repaid to the city in the amount of the contributions made by the city.

As of Wednesday, a city council resolution has also enabled traders in urban areas to benefit from rent reductions if they suffer from a drop in sales due to the corona. Until then, the regulation only applied to those who had to close their operations.
