Old lyrics about the holocaust by the new city poet of Haarlem, Darryl Danchelo Osenga, have ensured that his appointment was withdrawn after two days. The council of mayors and aldermen of Haarlem announced this on Friday.
After his appointment last Wednesday, older song lyrics from 2012 by Osenga surfaced in which he rapped about the holocaust.
“The Holocaust is just a cover-up for stupid sheep” and “the treatment of the concentration camps is just a laugh compared to our slave trade,” Osenga sang in the song Black page, as a criticism of the slavery past and how it is dealt with in the Netherlands.
These lyrics came to Osenga a lot of criticism. The College of Mayors and Aldermen of Haarlem say Friday that a more in-depth investigation was needed. According to the commission, Osenga has shown understanding for the decision.
In a comprehensive Facebook-post the rapper responded to his resignation on Friday. “Every person says stupid things that they think afterwards: I shouldn’t have said. Every person makes jokes that they thought were funny, but in the end it wasn’t.”

Osenga has also criticized the way he has been addressed. “The right Netherlands has a handful of constantly shouting that we are benefit recipients, that we have to work for our money, but as soon as we manage to secure positions, they grab tweets and posts from the past to commit character murder. “
“If you had spent all that time and energy that you spend on grudging and destroying others and invested in something useful, you could have applied for a city poet yourself,” Osenga concludes.
