City of Zurich ZH: successful investigation after the throwing of the torch in the football derby

The police investigation into the October 2021 football derby has been completed.

A total of 18 people who had taken part in the assault on the square were identified.

As is known, on 23 October 2021, after the football derby between Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Zurich, there was a ground storm. Masked FCZ fans threw lit torches in the direction of the GC fans. From there, torches were also thrown in the direction of the Scottish track. The police investigation has since been completed.

A total of 18 people who had taken part in the assault on the square, 14 FCZ fans and 4 GC fans were identified. During the investigation four people were arrested and 16 house searches were carried out. Five of the suspects confessed to being questioned, two in connection with the torch-firing.

During the in-depth investigation, further crimes and nine other suspects were identified. They must answer for crimes against the explosives law, trespassing, violation of the prohibition of masking, disobeying official orders and fraudulently obtaining a service.

Most of the prosecution’s proceedings against the accused are still pending. As always, the presumption of innocence is valid until the final conclusion of the proceedings.

The Zurich Municipal Police has issued eleven registration requirements and six district bans. Additional reporting obligations were requested from the cantons of Zurich and Zug.
