City Of Yes For Housing Opportunity Proposal Begins Public Review Process in New York City

This Monday the public review process began for a proposal that seeks to address homelessness in our city.

This is the “City Of Yes For Housing Opportunity”, which would allow the creation of housing units through a series of zoning changes.

As part of this process, Mayor Eric Adams met with working-class New Yorkers to begin analyzing the plan, which would create approximately 109,000 new homes over the next 15 years, according to The city’s Urban Planning Department.

“Today, the City Council begins the public review process of our ‘City Of Yes For Housing Opportunity’ proposal, the most progressive housing proposal in New York City history,” said Mayor Adams.

“To tackle this housing crisis, we need to think bigger and act faster, and that’s what our plan does. We are asking our City Council members to listen to New Yorkers who need more affordable housing and say ‘yes’ to the City. Of Yes For Housing Opportunity,'” said the mayor.

Supporters of the campaign say it comes as the city faces a generational housing crisis, with an unemployment rate of 1.4%.

“The diversity of New York’s neighborhoods is what makes our city amazing. Without truly affordable housing options in every corner, we risk losing the very essence that defines us. It’s time to take bold steps to ensure fair housing in every neighborhood, not just a select few,” the Department of Housing said in a message on social media.

The public review begins as the Department of Urban Planning sends the proposal to town boards and county presidents for review and consideration.

“What we’re doing is creating opportunities across the city even in places where retirees need more income and need a place to live to their children so that they can produce in the attic, in their basement or in the outside part of the house, “said Adolfo Carrion, commissioner of the Department of Urban Planning.

Once the public review process is complete, the project will be put to a City Council vote later this year.
