The City of Pornic filed a complaint for degradation of public property after the cutting of a dozen branches. The mayor of the town evokes an “act of sabotage” possibly linked to municipal politics.

Le Figaro Nantes

The cuts are clean. “They were made using a handsaw.“, is sorry to the Figaro Jean-Michel Brard, the mayor of Pornic (Loire-Atlantique). In the seaside resort he administers, two holm oaks located along a coastal path have just had a dozen branches amputated. This “act of sabotage” dixit the city councilor – probably realized during one night – was discovered on July 4 in the morning by municipal agents.

“It was not to make woodthunders the elected. The branches remained in place. They were placed on the ground. It’s just pathetic.” This attack on the natural and landscape heritage of the town greatly irritates the municipality. She decided to file a complaint against X with the gendarmerie for degradation of public property on a site listed as regional heritage. An offense punishable by a fine of 1500 euros.

A “sad first”

If for the time being, the investigation has not made it possible to determine the identity of the authors and their motivations, Jean-Michel Brard advances several tracks. The aedile notably makes a “political reading” of this event “malicious” which is a “sad first” in his municipality: “We have just modified the PLU [Plan local d’urbanisme, NDLR] to better preserve the trees and strengthen the protection of the vegetation.”

According to him, opponents of this modification could have expressed their dissatisfaction through this wild cut. “There are also residents who are opposed to the modernization of the port”he mentions as another hypothesis related to the «contexte local». Last guess: a “people problem” with the participation of individualswho wanted to harm the owners of the surroundings by making believe that they are at the origin of it to have a better view».

Twenty-year-old trees

The partially cut trees are about 20 years old. “Located along the coastal path, they could have become majestic if we had given them time”underlines with bitterness the town hall in a press release published on its website.

However, Jean-Michel Brard wants to be optimistic and counts on the strength of nature’s resilience so that the past splendor can be reborn. “The trees will recover. With this cut, they will grow back twice as fast.positive-t-il.
