City of Pharr Launches Anti-Rabies Campaign to Vaccinate Wild Animals

The City of Pharr launched an anti-rabies campaign that aims to vaccinate wild animals such as coyotes and raccoons.

The vaccine has been used since the 90s and there are 16 states in the American Union that carry out this vaccination campaign. Of course, the Texas Valley is no exception.

“This vaccine is focused on coyotes, on raccoons that are found in this area,” explains Dr. Cynthia Gutiérrez, Health Director of the City of Pharr.

In this way, anti-rabies vaccination is carried out for wild animals. Animal care personnel from the City of Pharr have made some tours through different sectors of the city and in grassland areas is where they apply this method.

The vaccine is administered orally and is soaked in fish oil. This, according to Gutiérrez, attracts animals to bite it and absorb the dose of the vaccine.

One of the animal care officials commented that they are spreading the vaccine in certain places where there are not many houses or people.

Thousands of envelopes have been distributed in the City of Pharr and in a way it is to protect our pets. Sammy Guzmán, Animal Service officer, recommends that the public not come into contact with it if they find one of these vaccines.

“It is an effort to vaccinate coyotes or animals that are loose, that may have rabies and that will infect other animals that may reach our pets,” says Gutiérrez.

Gutiérrez says that on occasions there have been cases of people who have been infected with rabies and that is why we must be prepared.
